The Mission of the Western Colorado Botanical Society is to promote responsible conservation of precious natural resources in Western Colorado by providing educational and recreational opportunities for visitors of all ages, while offering an aesthetic setting for cultural and community events.

In 1986 the Western Colorado Botanical Garden (WCBG) was established as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. The Gardens are located on 15 acres leased from the City of Grand Junction. The first step was clean-up as the site was originally a salvage yard in a run-down neighborhood, long neglected. Twelve local agencies and many volunteers worked long and hard to clear the land. A 4,900 square foot greenhouse/butterfly house, including a gift shop opened on 1997. The greenhouse displays over 600 tropical plant species and the butterfly house many species of North American butterflies. The gift shop provides educational and gift items celebrating nature and plants, as well. Since the greenhouse and butterfly house were opened, we have welcomed over 20,000 visitors annually, many of whom were school children on field trips.

In addition to the greenhouse, several outdoor gardens and exhibits have been completed along with the Pomrenke Children's Library which focuses on science and environmental books for children and adults. In collaboration with community members and other non-profit organizations, classes and workshops for children and adults are offered in the Library. It is also used for meetings of the WCBG Board, committees, and community botanical societies. The completed gardens and exhibits include the Mindy's Sensory Garden, Hemmerich Memorial Rose Garden, the Harmony In Color Garden, the North Channel Nature Trail, the Cactus and Succulent Garden, the Elizabeth Harris Amphitheater and the Children's Secret Garden.

In 1999 we were the recipient of the El Pomar Award for Excellence in Environmental issues. During the summer we partner with the Audubon Society, the Colorado National Monument, the Museum of Western Colorado and local hiking and photography clubs to offer the Young Naturalist Camp. This is a series of week-long day camps for elementary students interested in nature and the sciences. Children learn about conservation and the environment while having fun!
